Bronze Badge Course – Valley Flight
by vsaadmin | Sat, May 12, 2012May 12 2012
On the Saturday May 12 and May 19 the flight with DaveP in the Cessna will take place if the weather co-operates.
The plan is to do an hour or two of classroom work which will deal with the flight, navigation, charts, height and distance rings, and other items. Following this Dave will fly you down the valley to look for navigation clues and landing out fields and so forth. Up to 3 of you will on each flight. The cost of the flights will be shared between the group and should be between $40 and $60.For the Valley flight we would like you to have a copy of the Vancouver VFR Navigation Chart. If you can’t obtain one, Dave will try to have a photocopy of the relevant section. However, it is better if you have your own copy which you can then use for your own flying if you wish to.
We are strongly recommending that everyone buy a copy of Cross Country Manual For Glider Pilots by Dean Carswell which is part of the Gliding Mentor Series. We are going to use this as a sort of text book. In order to faciliate this, I will order these books in from the States. The price is $17 US plus shipping, so I am hoping it will be somewhere around $20 Cdn per book.
Please let me know right away, if you would like a copy as, not only do I have to order the books, I will be away on holiday for three weeks.
We also recommend for those of you who wish to delve deeper into cross country flight, The Soaring Pilot’s Manual by Ken Stewart, 2nd Edition. This I believe is around $25 – $35. This is an excellent book and it does have good sections on thermal, ridge and wave soaring as well as all the other things you need to fly cross country.
I hope that on Saturday, May 12th and Sunday May 13th and/or Saturday May 19th and Sunday, May 20th we will be able to have a go at, or at least start, rigging and de-rigging and trailering.
